Hitman 3 is the first major release of the current year. The game quickly rose to stardom and was received positively from both critics and players. It remained at the top of the UK sales chart during the launch week, which only tracks the sales of physical units of the games. The game exceeded the sales of its predecessor by 17% and 49% of the sales were for the PlayStation 5 version of the game. The game has even become profitable in under a week.
According to Gameindustry.biz, IO Interactive has announced that Hitman 3 has already recouped its production costs. The CEO of IO Interactive said, “We have been really happy with the Hitman 3 journey. It has been a labor of love between our fans and everyone at the studio. As the developer and publisher, we are immensely proud that we can say Hitman 3 is already profitable. We have recouped the total project costs in less than a week.”
He further explained that the success of Hitman 3 has put them in a favorable position, and they can leverage it to work on even more ambitious projects. The studio has already announced that it has started working on a new title based on the James Bond (Agent 007) movies.
Hitman 3’s immediate success can be attributed to the success of its predecessors that laid the groundwork but the state of the game at launch also played a major role. In a world of Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption 2 releasing a game that does not require stability and performance updates is a feat in itself.
Lastly, the commercial and critical success of the Hitman 3 may also make it one of the first contenders of the Game of the Year.
